Author Talk (Yrs 7 & 8) - Sarah Crossan
Multi-award-winning author, Sarah Crossan, gave a hugely engaging and entertaining talk to Years 7 and 8 on the pleasure and importance of reading, poetry, and why we sometimes fall out of love with reading. Sarah pointed out that poetry is everywhere and how growing up in a faith environment you have poetry in your heart. She had pupils reciting lines from Hamilton, Moana and Shakespear!
Sarah started her career as an English teacher, moving to the US she was surprised to find that American teenagers hadn’t fallen out of love with poetry (unlike the UK). This was mostly due to teenagers reading verse novels. And so, her career in writing verse novels began. Year 7 study her verse novel The Weight of Water as their set English text. Coincidentally, it was this book that inspired Tia Fisher (Year 9’s visiting author) to write her debut award-winning book in narrative verse!
Sarah’s books have won many prizes including the prestigious CILIP Carnegie Medal for Writing, the CBI Book of the Year, the YA Book Prize, and the CLiPPA Poetry Award.
